Fireflies
By Turyia Martin

Fireflies zoom counterclockwise diagrams

Encrypted across the horizon

Shine, show, shimmer

Wrinkled soil dusted from a day’s labor

As the pot levitates of flames

Papa bear watches as his cub caresses

its mother’s collarbone

Drifting into a night of passionate firefly love session

His mane has almost dreaded with popcorn salted sweat beads

But in a moment of serene gentle coos

The soul belongs to that gently strong collarbone

A soft physique that welcomes him

Even when he has knotted his words

of straight strings strung tight

Like kindred heartbeats

when they all lay still

Amidst the planetarium of winged hoots

and fireflies making love

Illuminating the puzzle pieces

About the Writer

Turyia Martin is the founder and CEO of Eye Amm Peace Productions, which proclaims the motto, “The Affirmation of a Visionary.” Martin’s personal mantra, “I can. I will. I triumph,” defines her spirit and determination. “Affirmation of a Visionary” stands for the ability to make intangible concepts converge with the mind’s eye, planting a seed that blossoms to produce vivid projections of the arts.

At age 24, the filmmaker and poet from Bedford Heights, Ohio also studies theater at Hampton University. A campus performance of And It Was Written, a play Martin wrote and produced, generated rave reviews.

Martin’s numerous accomplishments include documenting political efforts by area public figures, like Denise Kucinich; chronicling activities at a local camp that serves people with vision loss; and recording a golf tournament played at Linden Hall, the first course owned by an African-American. This list offers but a few of Martin’s contributions. She is legally blind.
